ILFORD'S Steve Uttley struggled through arctic-like conditions to impress in the Southern Counties Indoor 3,000m Championship Walk.
Before the off, Uttley stated that he would not be waging his usual tight battle with old rival John Hall (Belgrave Harriers), and when racing commenced he settled into a comfortable gait to easily secure second spot in 15 minutes and 49 seconds.
Not in contention for the lead and well ahead of the third-placed walker, Uttley had the luxury of being able to coast around the final couple of circuits.
Completing the frame in third spot was consistent Ilford stalwart Dave Sharpe in 17.40.
