FAIRBAIRN BOXING CLUB celebrated a national title triumph at Speke, Liverpool on Saturday when Jacob Basi clinched success at the junior novices finals.

Basi boxed in the under-66kg class A national finals for the Manor Park based club and maintained the improved form he has shown all along the national title trail as he outpointed tough northern rival Danny Coyne from Fox ABC, based in Middleton Greater Manchester.

The Fairbairn boxer had the edge in a tight opening round, but stepped up the pace in the second getting his shots off and not letting his opponent settle as he landed the effective punches to head and body.

With a useful lead going into the last round, Basi realised his opponent would have to step up the pace in an effort to turn the bout his way.

With this in mind, he followed orders to box and move and frustrate Coyne, who was clearly determined to pile on the pressure to make up the deficit.

Basi stayed on top, boxing well and working with his rival as he maintained his lead to clinch the verdict and the title by a comfortable 6-2 winning points margin.

The victory continued the improved form Basi has shown along the national novices title trail.

Club chief Jumbo Basi admitted : "It was a fine performance for Jacob to bring the national title to Fairbairn, and you can imagine we're all over the moon for him.
