Taser use in Barking and Dagenham is the second highest in the capital, new figures have revealed.
Taser-armed police officers fired in a third of their 21 call outs in the borough last year – well above the London average of 13.3 per cent.
The statistics show that tasers are used more in outer London boroughs than inner ones, which Chief Supt Mike Gallagher has suggested is due to less “resolution options” as a result of outer London boroughs having a “smaller number” of police officers.
Barking and Dagenham has 546 police officers, well under the inner London average of 726 officers.
Londonwide assembly member Tom Copley has criticised the reliance on tasers.
He said: “Tasers have an important part to play in keeping the police and local people safe but nobody wants to see their use becoming an everyday occurrence.
“With further government cuts on the cards, what nobody wants to see is the police forced into using their tasers more often because the officers needed for a peaceful resolution are no longer available.”
Last year officers fired their tasers most in Hillindon, using them in 37pc of their call outs. In Greenwich, Harrow and Richmond upon Thames, officers didn’t fire their tasers at all.
