A car theft ended in an 18-year-old being coaxed off a roof by firefighters in the early hours of this morning.

Police attended Dagenham Road at about 9.30pm last night following reports of car and phone being stolen by two men.

After speaking with the victim – who had also been assaulted – police found the stolen car abandoned in Maplestead Road, Dagenham.

They then traced the stolen phone to an address in Estuary Close, Barking, and arrested a 24-year-old man on suspicion of robbery as his suspected teenage accomplice fled.

The 18-year-old climbed onto the roof, with London Fire Brigade being called at 12.30am to bring him down safely.

He was arrested on suspicion of robbery and arrested again when police found he was wanted for three other theft-related matters.

The pair were taken to an East London police station were they remain for questioning.

The theft victim did not require treatment as a result of the assault.
