THREE people were involved in a serious traffic accident, leaving a woman trapped in her upturned car.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the accident at Martins Corner, Wood Lane, Dagenham, just before 6pm on Wednesday (February 9). Two cars had collided, leaving one on its roof.

The woman, 42, had her legs trapped in the car, and had to be cut free by the London Fire Brigade. She was taken to The Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel.

Two men, aged 22 and 33, were treated at the scene and taken to Queens Hospital in Romford. Their injuries were said to be non life threatening.

Three ambulance crews were sent. There was a single responder in a car and an air ambulance car.

A resident of Wood Lane, Bruce Thompson, 28, heard the accident from his house.

He said: “It sounded like shop shutters being shut – there were no screeching tyres or anything.

“We didn’t realise anything had happened until the services arrived and we saw the lights.” He said he then saw the upturned car and “about four police cars, two fire trucks and a fire crew car. We could see the cutting clamps.

“It took a while before we realised anyone was trapped in the vehicle still. We were looking from my bedroom window and could see people looking into the car,” he said.

Traffic was diverted from Wood Lane into Bennetts Castle Lane until the area was cleared.
