Dagenham man who lit up his home with 3,000 Christmas lights for 40 years dies

A Dagenham man who lit up his family home with a 3,000 strong Christmas light display for the past 40 years has died.

Strangers would flock to Tony Duff’s house in Downing Road, to see the colourful display whilst others found inspiration in his work.

Mr Duff’s widow, Jean, 78, said: “His light displays were lovely, people always remarked about how they loved the display.

“People would post letters through the door, even the police would describe it as the Christmas house.”

Every year Mr Duff, a retired gardener and groundsman for Havering Council, would put on his lights in October.

She added: “If he were alive now, he would be putting up the lights right now.”

Andy Mac, 51, of nearby Lowry Road, said he had been inspired by Mr Duff in the early 1990s to create his own Christmas light display.
