FOUR cars were torched by arsonists last week while their owners slept.
The vehicles, parked in The Mall, Heathway, Dagenham, were set alight in the early hours of the morning of Friday, February 8.
As well as the cars deliberately set ablaze, in the Millard Terrace residents' section of the car park, several others were damaged by the flames.
Car owners in Millard Terrace are furious as they have been requesting tighter security for over two years.
According to the outraged victims, the security shutters that prevent people from entering the car park between 7.30pm 6.30am have been broken for over a week.
Jenny Bone, 23, who owns one of the burned out cars, said: "Before the shutters were put in we were constantly calling the fire brigade because cars were being torched. Now they're broken it's started again."
Although there are cameras within the car park, they are directed at the doors to the lifts and do not cover the area where the cars are parked, despite the fact that they are designed to revolve.
Emma Seago, who lives on the estate, said that several residents witnessed the attacks on the vehicles and thought kids were behind them, but were too frightened to try to put a stop to them.
A council spokesperson said: "Security is a high priority and the security doors at Millard Terrace were fixed as quickly as possible after they were broken.
"Anti-social behaviour is across the borough and the council is working hard with residents and other partners to tackle anti-social behaviour wherever it is found.
