A FIRE ravaged through part of the eighth floor of a Barking tower block while unsuspecting families slept inside their homes.

Nearly half of the eighth floor was burnt and blackened with the walls, floors and ceilings severely damaged by huge amounts of smoke.

The blaze erupted in the early hours of Sunday morning (February 10) in The Shaftsbury's on the Gascoigne Estate inside one of the flats.

The family escaped with their two young children and no-one was injured.

Some residents were told to stay inside their homes as it was more dangerous to try to reach the fire exit through the clouds of smoke.

One young mother who lives in a neighbouring flat, said: "It was terrifying, I looked out of my door and all I could see was smoke.

"I couldn't evacuate my family because we couldn't get to the stairs."

A fire service spokesman said: "Fire fighters attended the scene at 04.54am on Sunday.

"There was 25 percent fire damage to one flat on the eighth floor.

"Two adults and two children were already outside when the officers arrived, they were not injured.

"The fire was brought under control an hour later.
