The 30 vehicles spotted on the GLA-owned land off New Road are there illegally, said a spokeswoman for GLA.

“We can confirm that GLA has decided to take legal action to evict them, although it may be that they move before that point,” she said.

The spokeswoman added that previously the travellers had occupied adjacent Ford land, and are believed to have broken through a fence on to the land they are currently occupying.

A spokesman for the coucnil added: “The travellers have now moved to the GLA site next to Fords. We will be supporting the landowner (GLA) in their move to evict them.”

The land is believed to be unused, but earmarked for residential development.
