Between 15 and 20 caravans of travellers have pitched up near Ripple Road, securing a fenced area with a padlock.

The first vehicles arrived on Dagenham’s Vehicle and Operator Services Agency site yesterday at about 11.30am.

Joseph Saunders, 32, saw the travellers approaching as he was working as a security officer at the former Goresbrook Leisure Centre site.

“By 12.30pm there were 15 or 20 – they’ve taken over the whole site,” he said.

“I think it looks quite unsightly.”

Joseph claims to have seen the same travellers scouting the area out six weeks ago and says they have taken the opportunity to fix a padlock the fence around the site to fight eviction.

And he says the site is expanding, with travellers also moving into nearby Goals Dagenham’s car park.

A council spokesman said that action would be taken against the travellers.

“We are using section 77 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act which instructs the travellers to leave within 24 hours,” he said. “If they do not move today we will go to court and, if successful, evict them by the middle of next week.”
