BARKING and Dagenham's three iconic Woolworth's stores could be forced to close after the firm went into administration.

But the shops will definitely stay open until after Christmas, and staff will continue to be paid.

The MFI furniture store in Abbey Road, Barking, is also under threat after that company also succumbed to the credit crunch.

Woolworth's was last week forced to call in administrators after the entire business collapsed.

There were fears that all the company's 815 shops, including those in Dagenham Heathway, East Street, Barking, and High Road, Chadwell Heath, would be forced to close.

But accountancy firm, Deloitte, which has hired a restructuring company called Hilco to run Woollies, has confirmed that jobs are safe for the time being at least.
