Barking and Dagenham Council have released a video to make people aware of the difficulties their elderly neighbours could face this winter.

The clip, which features amended lyrics to the 12 days of Christmas song, aims to highlight how simple things like popping in for a cup of tea and helping with shopping can make a difference to vulnerable people.

There are around 20,000 people aged 65 or over living in Barking and Dagenham, with as many as 600 facing spending Christmas alone.

Cllr Maureen Worby, cabinet member for social care and health integration, said: “This video highlights a significant problem not just in our borough, but across the country – too many older people are chronically lonely and aren’t getting the helping hand that they need during not just the festive season, but over the winter months.”
