West Ham grabbed their first Premier League win of the season with a battling and thoroughly deserved victory over previously unbeaten Everton at Goodison Park.

After four straight league defeats, the rock-bottom Hammers were under huge pressure to get a positive result from this game and with a clever counter-attacking style they stopped the Toffees in their tracks and hit them with three goals.

Winger Andriy Yarmolenko scored two first-half goals and after Everton had pulled one back just before the break, the Hammers made sure with a third from Marko Arnautovic.

West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini continued to tinker with his team to try and find the right formula. Pablo Zabaleta, Arthur Masuaku, Mark Noble, Declan Rice, Pedro Obiang and Andriy Yarmolenko all came in following the defeat at home to Wolves two weeks ago.

Aaron Cresswell, Carlos Sanchez, Robert Snodgrass and Michail Antonio were all dropped to the bench while Jack Wilshere was injured and Ryan Fredericks missed out altogether.

Everton started at pace and looked the livelier of the two sides without really carving out a chance.

And they paid for that after 11 minutes as they grabbed the lead.

Pedro Obiang played a clever ball over the top to Marko Arnautovic in the box and he unselfishly squared the ball for Yarmolenko to finish well from an unmarked position.

It was his first West Ham goal on his first start and there was more to come from the Ukrainian.

Felipe Anderson’s free kick was headed straight at Jordan Pickford by Issa Diop, while at the other end, Yarmolenko lost Lucas Digne whose cross from the left saw Tosun head straight at Lukasz Fabianski.

However, the winger made up for that slip on 31 minutes. Pickford’s kick went straight to Noble and though he was fouled, the ball fell to Yarmolenko as the ref played the advantage.

He cut inside, looked up and curled his shot into the far corner to make it 2-0.

Everton stepped up a gear as they battled to get back into the match.

Theo Walcott forced Fabianski to tip over, while the Hammers lost possession in midfield and Tosun forced another save from the West Ham keeper.

At looked as if the Hammers had survived until the break, but in injury time, Everton threw themselves a lifeline.

Jonjoe Kenny got the ball on the right wing and his cross was met by the head of Gylfi Sigurdson who beat Fabianski superbly to make it 2-1.

Everton had all the momentum at the beginning of the second half and they certainly dominated possession, but West Ham still looked dangerous on the break.

Rice looked imperious in midfield and almost set up a goal for Arnautovic.

And on 61 minutes they scored that vital third goal.

Obiang played a clever one-two with Arnautovic and his final pass allowed the Austrian to poke the ball past Pickford from close range.

Arnautovic hobbled off a couple of minutes later to be replaced by Antonio, while at the other end, Tosun fired another good chance over the bar.

West Ham huffed and puffed, and came closest with six minutes to go when a ball from the left was met by Oumar Niasse, but his effort rattled the crossbar.

It was a let-off for the Hammers, but one their hard work deserved as they held on for the vital three points.
