Karen Ray, who was one of several special guests, cut a ribbon to launch the fitness hub – which has had a £47,000 makeover – at the Rush Green campus.

The footballer was joined by Dagenham and Redbridge players Paul Benson and Craig Robson during the official opening.

The Dagenham Road college has partnered with West Ham to help deliver community football programmes, including recruiting a girl’s academy team.

“Girls need to be a little bit healthier, I am a sports nutritionist and working out and healthy eating go arm-in-arm, so I’m trying to encourage girls to look after themselves,” Karen explained.

The gym is now open to students and the general public.

Membership prices start from £14.99 a month. Call 020 3667 0147 to sign-up.
