Who would have thought that the biggest question in the Covid lockdown debate would be about the humble Scotch egg?
Does it count as a substantial meal? Some pubs will only be allowed to serve alcohol if you’re eating a meal and would eating a Scotch egg mean you qualify?
I must admit, as a stand-up comedian, I have eaten at most motorway services in the UK and the idea that a Scotch egg wasn’t a meal shocked me.
If it isn’t a substantial meal then how come I am so fat?
We debated this issue on the drivetime show on Time 107.5 recently; the hotbed of serious discussion.
One caller pointed out that if you had a date, offered to take them out for a meal and gave them just a Scotch egg you’d be going home alone.
Meanwhile another noted that a Scotch egg has the same constituent parts as a sausage and egg sandwich and that would be a meal.
I can understand why the government is in a pickle over this. If they say the egg counts, then pubs will buy a job lot from the supermarket and hand them out with pints.
People will still have a big session and wake up saying, “I overdid it on the Scotch last night. Not whisky, eggs.”
If the government say a Scotch egg doesn’t meet the standards the SNP will say it’s more evidence of Westminster bias and call for another referendum.
We’re missing the issue here. If a Scotch egg isn’t substantial then someone should have a word with those restaurants where you get a mouthful of quail arm next to three bits of lettuce and they charge £20.
