Leisure centre staff rushed to the aid of the woman who died yesterday after a gym workout, it has emerged.

The woman, who was in her 30s, had completed her session at Dagenham’s Becontree Heath Leisure Centre late yesterday morning, and was about to pick up her bag to go home when she suffered a cardiac arrest.

Staff rushed to perform first aid on the woman, and two ambulances, a paramedic and first responder were called to the Althorne Way gym shortly before noon. The woman was then taken to Queen’s Hospital in Romford, where she died shortly before 3pm.

“Sadly we can confirm that a woman was taken seriously ill while using the gym facilities at Becontree Heath Leisure Centre on Monday,” a council spokeswoman said today.

“We have been informed that she died later that afternoon. Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.”

The leisure centre was closed from noon yesterday, and re-opened this morning. The death is not being treated as suspicious.
