PUPILS from an East Ham primary school were joined by their MP to present prizes for a parents and pupils writing competition.

Stephen Timms presented ten-year-old Muhazza Sarwar with a calligraphy set after being judged best in Brampton School's Christmas Writing Competition.

The contest had been set up after parents and children took part in writing workshops.

Mr Timms also met students on the school council to hear about the practices it has put in place to improve behaviour.

These include allowing the best behaved children to play on the Nintendo Wii at lunchtime but, unfortunately for the East Ham MP, it wasn't available on his visit on Jan 29.

He did talk to the school council about his work as a finance minister and in the House of Commons.

Deputy head Mark Woodhouse said the pupils were incredibly excited about the visit.

"He's been at the school a few times and he always makes a fuss of the children", he said.
