Julie Marson has been announced as the Conservative candidate for Dagenham and Rainham, saying she promises to help “deliver Brexit”.

Mrs Marson came third in 2015 with 10,492 votes, behind Labour’s Jon Cruddas who received 17,830 and Ukip’s Peter Harris with 12,850.

But the Conservatives will be hoping with the collapse of Ukip in the national polls, Mrs Marson, who campaigned for Brexit, can take the seat.

Mr Cruddas, who has represented the constituency since 2001, supported Remain, while Dagenham and Rainham overwhelmingly voted in favour of Leave.

Mrs Marson, who was born in Barking and grew up in Chadwell Heath, told the Recorder: “Brexit is very important to the people of Dagenham and Rainham.

“I have always supported Brexit, and I will be another voice in Parliament who will help deliver the Brexit that people voted for.”

She said the Labour party and Mr Cruddas could not be trusted with the EU divorce negotiations.

“This is a really clear choice for voters in Dagenham and Rainham,” the former Thanet councillor said.

“A real mandate for the Brexit negotiations for Theresa May or Jeremy Corbyn’s coalition of chaos.”
