The Daggers are certainly on a high, four wins in a row and now within touching distance of the play-offs, with the prospect of an FA Cup second round upset today.

Debutant Jay Bird was the hero last Saturday, snatching the three points that were deserved but not a given against Scunthorpe, in the sort of game that wouldn’t have been won last season.

That win dragged us three points closer to the National League play-offs, now just a point away with an all-important game in hand.

This run of four victories in a row has been in no small part down to the great defensive displays, with just two goals having been conceded in those last four. This is not at the expense of attacking prowess either as the Daggers have netted 10 times in that period.

Looking to continue this momentum, Daryl McMahon’s men turn to the FA Cup and will be looking to cause a minor upset at home to League Two Gillingham.

The home draw filled myself and other supporters with confidence, knowing our fine form at Victoria Road, and the current run only heightens that belief of something special being achieved.

The prospect of getting into that third round draw is the real prize and something that the Daggers haven’t managed since the 2015/16 season and that tie at Goodison Park. That’s the prize, but the game is still to be won and Daryl said 'it's important to be ourselves' going into this one.

I’m hoping to see a confident display while showing ‘respect’ to today's opponents, as Matt Robinson alluded to, who have former Dagger Will Wright in their ranks.

It has been billed as the ‘Will Wright Derby’ by some, although that’s unlikely to catch on, but it will be good to see him return to the Victoria Road turf - so long as he doesn’t come out on top today!

It will be a similar team selection as weeks gone by with no more players returning from injury, though you have to wonder when they are fit if they can break into the current XI.

New arrival Bird is an example of a player who took his opportunity with both hands, securing the victory last time out, and it’ll be interesting to see if he can keep his impressive performances going.

However this competition for places can only be seen as a positive since, as McMahon has pointed out when speaking to Daggers TV, this group is the ‘most together’ he has seen since being at the club. That is something I know many fans have taken heart from in that most recent interview and know that this is being evidenced on the pitch.

This spirit goes beyond the pitch and into the terraces and stands, especially on days like today. It’s incumbent on the home support to get behind the Daggers and get them over the line and into the third round proper.

It’s the FA Cup, anything can happen! Come On You Daggers!
