Goresbrook got back to winning ways with a last-gasp victory over Newham in Hamro Foundation Essex League Division Three.

Visiting captain Sajjad Mirza chose to bat at May & Baker, but Muhammad Attuallah and Kane Messenger produced superb spells with the new ball.

Atesaam Syed held firm with an entertaining innings of 70, with support from Ayaz Younus (30), Aamir Shaukat (29) and Mohit Jain (35).

But just as Newham looked to be getting on top, Shane Barwick and Ted Ivory took two wickets apiece, before skipper Messenger (3-27) returned to end Newham's innings on 194.

The hosts lost Shaun Ross cheaply after tea, but fellow opener Jordan Calverley (34) showed dogged resilience and attacking strokeplay and added 72 with Danny Gillham Jnr.

Barwick and Gillham both hit 51 to leave Brook 150-3, but Newham hit back as Mirza claimed two quick wickets before the last over.

Tremendous running by Messenger and Ivory saw Brook to a five-wicket win with one ball to spare.

The thirds claimed a five-wicket victory of their own against Ilford fifths on the other M&B pitch.

Sent into the field after losing the toss, Brook saw skipper Billy Parnell (5-25) rip through the Ilford batting line-up.

Spinner Fahad Zafar (3-25), Ben Atkins and debutant Ranjeet Godhaniya shared the other wickets as the visitors were skittled for 98 in 28 overs.

Stalwart Andy Livett fell without scoring in reply, but youngsters Jack Gibson and William Preston both reached double figures to settle home nerves.

Mafi Choudhury impressed with the bat for the second week running as he clubbed a quick unbeaten 44 to see Brook to their target in some comfort.

The seconds came up short against Old Southendians & Southchurch, who posted a challenging 283-4 at Garon Park.
