Athletics: Alain Cooper triumphs in latest Barking Road Runners handicap race

Alain Cooper was the winner of £10 in Barking Road Runners’ second 5k handicap race of the season.

Cooper’s time of 24 minutes and 13 seconds have him a sizeable margin of victory, though the victor will now see his handicap cut substantially ahead of the third race.

Kevin Wotton (19.43), Alan Murphy (39.14), Paul Withyman (20.00), Richard Gatehouse (21.33), Viorel Mih (21.11), Kresh Veerasamy (28.18) and Andy Preston (23.00) were also in action.

Also finishing were Phil Ellul (21.37), Martin Mason (26.53), Nikki Cranmer (29.10), Tom Coughlan (28.35), Diarmuid MacDonnell (21.00) and Nige Swaby (29.09).

Veronica Barikor (30.54), Barry Culling (24.14), Rob Courtier (29.00), Trevor Cooper (25.17) and Andrew Gwilliam 30.13 all finished the race.

Elsewhere, Faye Spooner continued her quest to take in 12 marathons in 12 months by completing the Edinburgh event.

Spooner headed north of the border for the sixth marathon of her challenge, coming home in four hours, 14 minutes and seven seconds.

Andrew Gwilliam was another in marathon action, completing the race hosted by Kent Road Runners in 4:35.51.

Colin Jones completed the Jeskyns Challenge, which consists of 10 laps of a 3.28-mile circuit, in an unofficial time of 5:31.

There was also a healthy number of Barking Road Runners present at the Vitality Mile in Westminster.

The race took place over the iconic final mile of the London marathon, allowing those in action to appreciate the final stretch without the gruelling 25 miles before!

Lee Johnson was the fastest club member in 4.38, followed by Derv Bartlett (5.21), Natalie Traylen (7.19,) Helena-May Traylen (8.02), Robert Courtier (8.08), Maria Bartlett (10.08) and Sean Bartlett (10.08).
