Local athletes defied muggy conditions to compete in the latest East London Five Interclub Series event in Hainault Forest last Wednesday evening.

Ilford AC hosted the Newman Hilly 5 – the fourth race in this year’s series – and the two-lap mixed terrain course took athletes on some challenging hills near the children’s zoo and golf course.

After a long downhill stretch towards a circuit of the lake, they repeated the route, with Paul Suett (32.30) of Dagenham 88 Runners pipping Barking Road Runners Diarmuid Mac Donnell (32.47) to earn the bragging rights between the rival clubs.

Dagenham sent a total of 29 members to the event, with the men’s scoring team completed by Callum Cockley (37.22), Jamie Austin (38.15), Gary Cardnell (42.10), Ian Cummins (42.16) and Matthew Ashford (45.45).

Their first woman home was Hannah Sheikh (43.10), as Rahana Islam (45.01), Cassandra Bryant (45.50) and Jenny O’Hanlon (47.03) completed the scoring quartet.

Following Mac Donnell home for Barking were Derv Bartlett (33.43), Antony Leckerman (36.29), Martin Page (36.31), Trevor Cooper (37.18) and Rory Burr (37.19).

And their first four women to finish were Natalie Traylen (45.51), Cristina Cooper (52.11), Leslie Jay (54.04) and Nikki Cranmer (54.38).

The next race in ths 2018 ELVIS competition is a 5k race at Harold Wood on Wednesday August 1, starting at 7.30pm.
