Cross-country squad have to settle for third place
Barking Road Runners just missed out on promotion in the South Essex Cross-Country League at Hadleigh.
An understrength squad finished one point behind neighbours Dagenham 88s and four adrift of Division Two champions Rochford in the final round, after some battling displays on the challenging 4.3-mile course.
Steve Philcox and Philip Ellul impressed for Barking, who used the event as part of their own club championships and saw Vicky Cooper finish as their leading woman on 400 points ahead of Cristina Cooper (396) and Alison Fryatt (385), as Dawn Blake, Sonu Thethy, Vicki Groves, Veronika Barikor, Nikki Cranmer, Julie Gillender and Lisa Maughan also took part.
Derv Bartlett topped the men’s standings with 400 points, ahead of Colin Jones (396) and John George (389), with Paul Ward, Trevor Cooper, Kiron Chapman, Daniel Plawiak, Dennis Spencer – Perkins, Chris Groves, Anthony Maughan, Gary Harford, Dave Finch, Micky Ball and Ken Summerfield also in action.
*Derv Bartlett defied wet and windy conditions to complete the Essex 20-mile road race in 2:20.10.
Athletes tackled a challenging three-lap course around North East Essex, with Rakesh Sandhu, Andrew Gwilliam (3:17.40) and Kresh Veerasamy also finishing, as Ron Vialls completed two laps.
*Barking members took on the Hockley Woods Trail Challenge, where runners could complete as many 5k loops as they wished.
Faye Spooner managed eight muddy laps to record the third marathon distance of her plan to complete 12 in a year and Natalie Traylen managed seven laps for 23.3 miles in just over five hours.
Amanda Heslegrave finished six laps, as Barry Culling also took part.
