HAVERING & MAYESBROOK athlete Kate Cowley took a major step back towards the international stage when she won pentathlon gold in the England Ath-letics Open Indoor Combined Events Championships at Sheffield.

Her winning score of 3,974 points was just 96 points shy of her best and club record set in 2004 before a series of injuries put her international career on hold.

Her winning tally secured a win by 68 points from Colche-ster's Catherine Holdsworth.

Victory almost certainly earns Cowley selection for the senior indoor combined events international aga-inst the Czech Republic, France and Spain at the same Sheffield venue next month.

Afterwards she said: "I was pleased just to finish it as I've had a bad hamstring for the past few weeks.
