Dagenham 88 Runners dug deep to compete at the Essex Cross-Country Championships at Woodford’s Claybury Park at the weekend.

The women tackled three laps in a five-mile race, while the men had to contend with three longer circuits in a 7.5-mile event, and their teams finished 18th and 22nd respectively.

Rahana Islam led the women home in 43 minutes two seconds, with Emma Dudman (45.20), Hannah Sheikh (47.34), Louise Chappell (49.37), Timi Veerasamy (51.02), Rosina Salmon (51.24) and Sara Prior (55.54) also in action.

The men’s squad was spearheaded by Nigel Swinburne, who clocked 45.05, as Peter Salmon (53.37), Richard Dudman (54.07), Trevor Robinson (61.49), Ian Cummins (67.53) and Mike Pegnall (70.02) also took part.

The next cross-country event for Dagenham is the Benfleet 15 on Sunday, following by a South Essex League action at One Tree Hill in Langdon Hills on January 22.

n Liverpool fan Joel Denning set a new personal best of 42.51 at the latest Olympic Park 10k around West Ham’s London Stadium home.

And fellow Dagenham 88 Runners took part in various parkrun events, with Caroline Tuck clocking 23.31 at Hampstead Heath and Debbie Vince (35.56) in action at Barking.
