Club sends big squad to 24-hour event

Dagenham 88 Runners saw their men claim second place at the Spitfire Scramble 24-hour race at Hornchurch at the weekend.

The club fielded five teams in the event, with competitors trying to run as many 5.9-mile laps as possible.

And Dagenham’s Paul Prior, Peter Salmon, Nigel Swinburne, Tony Woodgate and Jeff Webster combined for 29 laps and a total of 174 miles to claim the runners-up prize.

Jennifer Akroyd, Rahana Islam, Timi Veerasamy, Beverley Eagles, Sara Prior, Louise Honey Chappell and Jane Swanson-Sprent managed a combined 27 laps and 162 miles, while Gary Cardnell, Caroline Tuck, Danny Allen, Lee Duggan, Ian Cummins, Caroline Cummins, Jacqui Elliot and Julie Cardnell ran 25 laps (150 miles).

That mark was matched by Dagenham’s Steve Whitfield, Irene Campen, Lorraine Scott, Emma Dudman, Jamie Austin, Luke Summers, Kirstie Ann Woodgate and Danny White, while Jayne Tee Kay, Sharon Robinson, Stephen Easley, Suzanne Easley, Pippa-Anne Ridall, Leigh Moring, Carol Moring and Michael Pegnall managed 22 laps (132 miles).

Debbie Vince ran solo and managed six laps for 36 miles.

n Two Dagenham 88 Runners took part in the Midnightman overnight triathlon in Dartford.

Richard Dudman ran a personal best 10:50.16 for the ironman distance of 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and 26.2-mile run to finish fourth overall and first in the M40 category.

Clubmate Mark Jermey tackled the middle-distance option of 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run and finished in 5:31.19.

Dudman received a special award for his fifth appearance at the event, having also competed in the last Weymouth Aquathon of the summer, where he followed a 100m sea swim with a 5k run and finished in 37.41.

n A five-strong Dagenham contingent tackled the Subway 5k and were led home by Anni Amin in 25.58.

Vennisa Amin was one second behind, as Jack Palmer (29.59), Junior Luckhurst (39.59) and Joanne Luckhurst (42.33) completed the quintet.

n Sam Gibbons was first past the post in the latest Barking & Dagenham Junior parkrun at Central Park on Sunday.

Gibbons clocked 8.38 to finish well clear of Dylan Leadeham (11.11) and Vansh Thomas (11.45), who completed the top three.

Also taking part were Brandon Leadeham (11.47), Dagenham 88 Runners Jack Palmer (11.48) and Freddie Palmer (16.55) and Tommy Woon (13.51), Ansh Thomas (14.10) and Ellie Woon (17.39).

Edinburgh: Mick Brown 21.37.

Hockley Woods: Bill metcalfe 39.16.

Raphael: Lee Duggan 25.10; Sam Veerasamy 27.44; Timi Veerasamy 29.38.

Valentines: Nils Hollmann 22.36; Manji Gami 26.09; Vennisa Chowdhury 30.59.
