Exhibition match: Barking Abbey 59 Portland Pilots 74

A Barking Abbey select squad were beaten 74-59 in an exhibition match at home to Portland Pilots.

The Pilots, who are an NCAA Division One side, played the match as part of their tour to the UK, having also taken part in games in Leicester.

Portland were not the first team from the USA to grace the floor at Abbey, joining Notre Dame, Michigan State, West Virginia and Florida Tech on the list of visitors from the States.

At the end of the first quarter, the hosts trailed 15-12 as Pilots started brightly.

The match continued to be nip-and-tuck in the second period, but by half time Abbey trailed 39-31.

Barking continued to hold their own, though, and managed to cut the gap by one to 56-50 by the end of the third.

However, Portland finished strongly, netting 18 points in the final quarter to Abbey’s nine to secure a 75-49 win for the visitors in a pulsating match.
