Essex head coach Anthony McGrath admitted Somerset spinner Jack Leach was the difference after his side’s 45-run defeat at Taunton.

Left-armer Leach took a career-best 8-85 as Essex slumped from 256-4 to be dismissed for 290 on Wednesday afternoon.

And McGrath felt the loss of a wicket on the stroke of lunch proved key as a momentum-shifter, saying: “For me the game-changer was the wicket of Dan Lawrence just before lunch. It swung the momentum Somerset’s way, even though we still had wickets in hand.

“Lawrence and Ryan ten Doeschate had done well and helped us recover from the loss of Nick Browne and Tom Westley in quick succession. But sometimes you have to give credit to the opposition.

“Jack Leach was superb and he deserved his wickets. His control was exemplary and it made the difference.”

Leach himself revealed it was the best he had every bowled, adding: “I have had some low times this season with two injuries and they make days like today all the sweeter.

“It’s the best I have bowled because I needed to be patient on that pitch to get my rewards.

“During the days when I was injured I kept telling myself there was a lot of Championship cricket still to be played. Now I can’t wait for the remaining games.

“Being injured teaches you to be patient and that probably helped when I needed to show the same quality with my bowling today.”
