Scintilla got the defence of their Essex County League Premier Division title off to a winning start with a two-wicket victory over Aztecs.

Ayaz Karim (2-34) and Abul Hasib (2-37) nabbed braces as Aztecs made 240 from their 45 overs after winning the toss and choosing to bat first.

But Scintilla reached their target in only the 34th over as man of the match Hasib hit a thunderous 81 and was well supported by Zahed Mamun (64).

Captain Karim said: “There will be a lot more pressure on us this season and our character and mettle will be tested.

“Being reigning champions, every game will be a cup final as our opponents look to wrestle away our trophy. We hope to remain focused throughout.”

The second team were also celebrating after a tense 15-run win over their Aztecs rivals.

Opening batsman Zahied Hussain fell eight runs short of a century, while Yasin Arafat added 47.

Chisty and Tanver also contributed with the bat as Scintilla were dismissed for 247 in the 43rd over, but Aztecs got close.

Moin (3-23), Tanver (3-48) and Adnan (2-39) shared most of the wickets to fall as Aztecs were dismissed for 232 and captain Shaha Riadh said: “We were unfortunate to miss out on promotion last year through too many bad weather days.

“The boys are focused and we aim to give it 100 per cent for the season ahead. If we do that, we will do very well.”
