All-rounder leads way with bat and ball
Ishaq Shawn produced an impressive all-round display to help Scintilla to victory in their latest Essex County League Premier Division outing at the weekend.
Captain Ahmed Choudhury chose to bat first against Aztecs at Fairlop Oak Playing Fields after winning the toss, but Anam Arafat Amit and Rokan Uddin Arafat fell cheaply.
Shawn held firm, though, and scored a crucial 80 runs, while also having support from ever-consistent Rishad Haque (39) as Scintilla reached 175 in the 41st over.
Ayaz Karim struck early with the ball in the Aztecs reply, with Shawn removing three of the top four.
Shawn struck again to finish with 4-27 from his nine-over spell, while Amit (2-16) and Karim (2-20) finished with braces as the visitors were dismissed for 107 in 36 overs.
Victory leaves Scintilla sitting in second place ahead of a blank weekend, before returning to action at Hawks on June 17.
Captain Choudhury said: “In the Essex County League there are no easy games and this championship can be won by a number of teams.
“It’s nice to win comprehensively in the end, but I have earmarked some improvements for us to work on.”
The news was not so good for Scintilla seconds, who were well beaten by Redbridge Parks in Division One.
Only two of their batsmen made it into double figures as Asad Rehman produced a stunning spell to run through the card almost single-handedly.
Rehman finished with a superb 9-25 from his nine-over spell, after Syed Ali Bukhari took the other Scintilla wicket to fall as they were skittled for 60 inside 17 overs.
Junaed Rahman Tanin took 3-29 in the Redbridge reply, but could not prevent his Scintilla side slipping to a six-wicket loss.
Barking’s third team were the club’s only side in action and they got the better of Bow Green seconds in Division Two.
Captain Imran Hussain put Green into bat at Mayesbrook Park and saw Omeir Khan (2-35) and Nehal Butt (2-44) nab braces as the visitors reached 225-9 in their 45 overs.
Abhishek Sharma, Imran Butt, Hussain and Kashif Moghul also had success with the ball for the home side, who saw Keval Patel (29) and Moghul (30) put on 57 for the first wicket in reply.
Nikhil Gupta then had support from Ahsan Khan, Nehal Butt and Qasim Majid on his way to an unbeaten 75 from 91 balls.
And Imran Butt hit two sixes and a four in a whirlwind 26 off 15 balls as Barking secured a six-wicket win in the 43rd over.
The first team return to the defence of their Premier Division title with a trip to Newham this weekend.
