Do you struggle to hit your putts the correct distance? Miss those short putts left and right?
You may find that both those problems comes from trying to use the hands and wrists to control the stroke too much.
It can be very difficult to control the muscles in the hands repeatedly and under pressure – this lack of control can lead to inconsistent long putting.
Couple this with how it can change the angle the clubface points (left or right) and all of a sudden we can miss some short putts – not a recipe for low scores! So, how can you putt like a pro? Firstly when you set up to the ball, you will notice your forearms and the putter form a ‘Y’ shape.
If you maintain this ‘Y’ shape throughout the stroke (as shown), you will find that the chest and shoulders control the motion of the club more so than the hands.
This is the technical aspect of what you are trying to achieve, putting being very much a feel part of golf.
Here are some games you can play before you go out or when you practice to perfect your new technique!
*Putt from anywhere on the green to the fringe. What you are trying to do is get the ball to rest against the fringe.
*Once you can get the ball resting up against the fringe from different spots, do the same thing but before you watch the ball, make a judgement on whether you think the ball is short, long, or on the fringe.
*Set yourself up three feet from a hole and try to hole 10 putts in a row. If you miss – start again.
Once you get up to the eighth or ninth putt, the nerves will start to kick in!
*Once you have holed 10 putts from three feet, do the same from four feet.
