Blues set to hand chances to fringe players despite being on course for a treble

Barking joint-player/manager Glen Golby insists he will continue to rotate his squad for cup matches, despite the Blues being on the verge of winning the Essex Senior League.

With six league games left, the Blues require just five more points to claim the title and have a chance to complete a treble this term.

Barking visit Sawbridgeworth Town in the League Cup quarter-finals tonight and host Redbridge in the same stage of the Gordon Brasted Memorial Trophy next Tuesday.

But Golby says he will continue to use the cup matches to give a chance to fringe members of his squad, noting it is only fair to those players.

“We’ve used the cup games as a chance to rotate the squad and the trip to Sawbridgeworth will be no different,” he said.

“We’ll rest some of the boys looking ahead to Saturday, and it’ll be a chance to reward those who have been patient in waiting for a chance.”

By rotating his squad, there is a chance for some of those involved in the cup tonight to show Golby and fellow Barking joint-boss Steve Willis why they should play more often.

And the Blues boss seems to relish having those selection issues, partly because it is likely to mean a long run in the cups for the Mayesbrook Park club.

“It’s a chance for those boys coming into the side to show us that they should be involved in the first-team squad once we’ve one the title, “ he added.

“It’ll be good for them to show us what they’ve got and give me and Steve a headache in terms of selection in the future.”
