Essex Senior League: Newham 0 Barking 3

Barking saw off the challenge of 10-man Newham to equal their best ever start to a league season.

The Blues were unbeaten for their opening seven games of the 2000-01 season, and have now matched that feat with a 3-0 success at the Old Spotted Dog on Saturday.

It looked like it was going to be a good day for Mick O’Shea’s side when the hosts found themselves reduced to 10 men with just nine minutes on the clock when Ryan Creed was brought down.

But the plucky hosts kept on battling and Barking goalkeeper Jay Willis was forced into a good save on 28 minutes.

Sipho Mtyanda and Sam Owusu was denied up the other end and the first half looked like remaining goalless until Ben O’Brien struck in the first minute of stoppage time.

Newham’s resistance ended with that and O’Brien headed home the second to put the Blues on course, before Mytanda sealed the success on 69 minutes.

Mick O’Shea’s side are on their travels tomorrow when they make the trip to face Hendon in the first round of the London Cup.

Barking: J Willis, Ling, Moore, Golby (Hughes 76), S Willis, Staunton, Owusu, O’Brien, Creed, Mytanda, Foster (Da Silva 69).

Unused substitute: Baker.
