Bostik North: Barking 0 Heybridge Swifts 1
PUBLISHED: 13:26 27 August 2017
Barking are still searching for their first win of the Bostik North season after being edged out at Mayesbrook Park.
Blues went into the match on the back of a morale-boosting FA Cup replay win at Saffron Walden Town in midweek, which had earned the club £1,925 in prize money and a trip to Gorleston on September 2.
But Heybridge had claimed a 5-1 win at Romford on Wednesday and made a bright start on a warm day, creating a string of early chances.
Harrison Chatting saw a left-footed shot tipped on to a post by Ollie Bowles, who also kept out a fierce effort from Juan Luque, before Luke Callander volleyed over from Guillem Ramon’s cross.
The hosts forced a couple of corners, which were cleared, and created some problems with long throws from debutant Kreshnic Krasniqi.
Abs Seymour volleyed a good chance over from 10 yards, but Swifts saw Callander put Sam Bantick through on goal on 35 minutes, only to shoot just wide of Bowles and the target.
The visitors were forced to shuffle their defence in the second half due to an injury to Phil Anderson, but they kept Barking at distance after the restart.
Callander and Josh Fagbohun had close-range chances to break the deadlock and the scoreline remained blank as Callander headed wide from a corner.
But the only goal of the game came on 70 minutes as Harry Morgan flicked the ball on for Spanish striker Luque, who slotted past Bowles.
Barking could not find a reply in the time remaining, as Jack Giddens held firm in the Heybridge net, and with only one point from three matches to date will hope for better when they visit Witham on Bank Holiday Monday.
Barking: Bowles, Tarbard, Putt (Marfo 86), Willis, Fitzsimons, O’Brien, Ola (Knight 75), Seymour, Jones, Krasniqi, Taylor (Capela 79). Unused subs: Izukanne, Abiola.
