Striker extends deal until the end of the season
DAGENHAM & REDBRIDGE striker Bas Savage’s recent go-od form has been rewarded with a contract extension until the end of the season.
The 28-year-old initially signed on at Victoria Road in September until the end of 2010 and had been sweating over whether or not he would be kept on.
However, after leading the line in dominant fashion during Saturday’s 2-0 win at Carlisle United, he is on the verge of penning a new deal.
“We’re going to extend it until the end of the season,” confirmed manager John Still. “That will be completed this week.”
Savage was one of two players not to train on Monday, following the victory in Cumbria, with Solomon Taiwo also nursing an injury, although it is believed both were only a precautionary measure.
While Still insists he is not afraid to change a winning team, both should keep their place for the weekend’s visit of free-scoring Peterborough United, if available.
The Posh, who currently sit eighth in the League One table, but boast the unusual statistical quirk of having scored the most goals in the division (38) and conceded the most (40).
“They’re a good attacking team and I think they’d be disappointed with themselves at the end of the season if they’re not in the promotion shake-up,” said Still, who was in charge at London Road for the 1994-95 season.
“A lot of investment has gone into them and they’re a club I used to manage so I know them and they’re a good club.”
Striker Nathaniel Pinney has returned to Crystal Palace this week, while young defender Luke Wilkinson has extended his loan at Boreham Wood for another month.
“I honestly think our form has been good,” said Still.
“Since we brought the loan players in I think we’ve seen a steady improvement and that was carried on at Carlisle.
“So I’m hoping we can now carry on improving our performances.”
Meanwhile, a new date has been set for Huddersfield Town’s trip to Victoria Road.
Originally scheduled for December 4, but postponed due to unsafe surrounding areas, it will now be played on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at 7.45pm.
