Josh Staunton was dismissed for Shaymen in 35th minute, but Essex club still unable to win

Peter Taylor was disappointed Dagenham & Redbridge could not capitalise on playing against 10 men for over an hour after drawing 1-1 at home to Halifax Town in the Vanarama National League.

On his return to Victoria Road, former Daggers midfielder Josh Staunton was sent off in the 35th minute for a forceful challenge on Alex McQueen.

The Essex club then took the lead in the 60th minute when Jack Munns leathed one home from just inside the box.

With 10 minutes remaining, though, Halifax drew level when Nathan Clarke headed in a corner at the back post.

There was also some drama late on as Daggers skipper Ben Nunn was dismissed after being booked twice in stoppage time.

And boss Taylor was left to stew over an ultimately disappointing afternoon for his side.

“Halifax go a man down and Josh is a decent fella who wouldn’t go and hurt anybody and he was a little bit unlucky, but it probably was a red card,” he said.

“You then go to 10 men and say if you show some patience and keep playing football, you’ll get a goal.

“I thought we did that at the start of the second half and I really liked it. We came out and played some good football.

“We changed our shape a little bit and I think it worked. We then get a very good goal, but for some reason we stop and didn’t play the way we were playing.”

As for why his team stopped playing after opening the scoring, the Daggers manager seemed at a loss to explain.

“I don’t know whether the boys were thinking about just keeping hold of the lead because they’ve got 10 men.

“Their goal shows you can’t do that and it’s too dangerous to do that; you have to kill a team off if you get an opportunity.

“There are times when you don’t get opportunities to kill teams off, but we had chances that had to go in the net.”
