Conor Wilkinson opened scoring for Essex club in just the eighth minute

Peter Taylor believes an early goal was a major boost for Dagenham & Redbridge in their 3-1 win at home to Havant & Waterlooville in the Vanarama National League.

Daggers dominated the opening exchanges against the Hawks and took the lead through Conor Wilkinson in the eighth minute.

Wilkinson then added his second of the match in the 50th minute, before Angelo Balanta netted a third for the home team 25 minutes later.

The only sour note for the Essex club came five minutes from time when Jonah Ayunga scored a consolation goal for the visitors.

Taylor feels the early goal for Daggers set them on their way to victory against Havant, but wished their second goal had come sooner.

“It was a great goal from Conor and he has that ability, but what we needed after that was another goal as that would have settled us down a little bit,” said the 65-year-old.

“I felt we started making some errors after the first goal and we tried too hard, overcomplicating things a little bit.

“To come in 1-0 at half-time, I was happy, but we needed that second goal and Conor delivered again.”

By scoring twice against Havant, Wilkinson took his Daggers’ record to four goals in three games since joining on loan from Sky Bet League One side Gillingham until January.

It has been a remarkable start to his Daggers career by Wilkinson, but Taylor is not overly surprised with how well the forward has done since moving to Victoria Road.

“People who have worked with Conor know the ability he’s got and the nice thing for us is that he’s playing with a smile on his face,” added the Daggers boss.

“He’s enjoying training and he’s enjoying playing and if you can get him like that, he’s a real handful, which he’s showing.”

Victory against Havant means Daggers have won five of their last six games in the league, having previously lost five in a row.

It is a run of form that has lifted the Essex club four points clear of the relegation zone and up to 17th as the season approaches the halfway mark.
