Dagenham & Redbridge Jake Howells is relishing playing regularly and learning his new role as a left-back ahead of their clash with Torquay United this weekend.

The 26-year-old, who has been a left midfielder for most of his career, has made 26 appearances at the back this term and admits it’s not an entirely new position to him.

“When I first started playing when I was a youngster at Luton I used to play left-back for a little while and when I went to Wales I was a left-back but I’ve never played regularly at left-back,” he said.

“This year I’ve sort of been given a chance to do that and I’ve enjoyed it, each game I’m still learning the position, and just to play football is a nice feeling after the season I had last year being injured.

“I’m happy and hopefully we can get the results to get into the play-offs.”

The former Luton Town and Eastleigh man expects a tough match when they make the trip to Plainmoor on Saturday.

“They’re on a good run at the moment from what I know and they’re fighting to get points like we are fighting to get points,” Howells said.

“They’re going to be trying to win it and we’re going to be trying to win it, so it should be a good game and we know it’s going to be tough, as not a lot of teams have gone there and won I don’t think.”

Daggers face a busy week as they have back-to-back away fixtures as they travel to Dover Athletic on Tuesday evening (7.45pm) as well and Howells reveals it’s tough but part of being a footballer.

“It is tough, but it’s our job at the end of the day, this is what we work hard for to play games and win games,” he said.

“We know it’s going to be tough Saturday, so we’ll go there and get the best result we can and then look at Tuesday and go from there.”
