Daggers make the short trip to Parkside to tackle historic rivals on Wednesday

Dagenham & Redbridge assistant coach Junior Lewis has said he is looking forward to seeing players get minutes ahead of his team’s Essex Senior Cup tie at Grays Athletic.

Daggers are expected to field a weakened team on Wednesday night as they bid to reach the quarter-finals of the cup competition.

The National League side made it in to the fourth round with a 4-0 win away to Witham Town.

“There’s been a team picked for Wednesday, we’re looking forward to seeing a few players who have gone out on loan and come back,” Lewis told the club website.

The 44-year-old admitted, though, that the side to face Grays had been picked with their trip to Barrow on Saturday in mind.

“The gaffer (John Still) has had a look at the team because we have to keep Saturday in mind,” he added.

The Essex club have their longest away trip of the season this weekend when they travel to Cumbria to face Barrow.

And Lewis knows it’s going to be a tough ask to keep Daggers’ three-game winning streak going.

“We’ll train on the way up there, but we’re on a three-game winning streak and we’ll have to try and continue that with our work rate which is something the players have shown over the last three games,” said the assistant manager.

Daggers were without a National League game at the weekend with scheduled opponents Boreham Wood in action in the second round of the FA Cup.

Instead, John Still fielded a team on Friday night to take on Crystal Palace under-23s, winning 3-2 with the fit-again Chike Kandi scoring a hat-trick.

“It was good, a very good game.” said Lewis. “I thought our players applied themselves really well and they came away with a 3-2 victory.”
