Daggers defender joins O’s on a free transfer after signing two-year deal

Dagenham & Redbridge left back Joe Widdowson has joined National League rivals Leyton Orient after failing to agree a new deal with the Victoria Road club.

Widdowson has penned a two-year deal with the O’s and becomes the east London club’s second signing of the summer after David Mooney joined on Friday.

The 28-year-old initially moved to Daggers on loan in October 2014 before making the switch permanent the following January.

Last season, the former West Ham United youngster started all but one league game as John Still’s men finished in the play-offs.

That success is something Widdowson will aim to emulate with the O’s as they look for a swift return to the Football League.

Widdowson’s depature, though, does leave Daggers low on options at left back for the new season.

Currently, there is no out-and-out left back in the Essex club’s squad, though Luke Pennell and new man Daniel Sparkes can fill in there.
