The wait is finally over as Dagenham & Redbridge picked up their first win of the season with a 2-0 success at Cambridge United in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.

Ashley Hemmings fired Daggers into the lead with his second strike in three days, celebrated in a way only he can.

Matt McClure marked his return from suspension with a goal soon after, although whether it should go down as his or Kane Ferdinand’s is still the subject of some debate.

But it doesn’t matter who scored as Dagenham progressed in the cup and can now look forward to a tie against the likes of Southend United and Millwall.

Liam O’Brien (7.5) - Made some good saves but was rarely called upon with Cambridge well contained.

Josh Passley (7.5) - Good runs forward but was allowed to attack with no U’s player coming at him due to hosts’ formation.

Ayo Obileye (7) - Couple of times when defender dived in for tackles and missed. Also moment of miscommunication with O’Brien in first half but kept a clean sheet so can’t moan too much

Clevid Dikamona (7) - Strong as an ox and limited hosts to pot shots but still nervous Frenchman may make costly mistake at wrong time.

Jack Connors (7.5) - Looked old head in young back four. Good defensively, calm and composed in possession - Joe Widdowson may have fight on hands.

Ashley Chambers (6.5) - Seemed scared to shoot even when oppportunity presented itself. Couple of good crosses and passes but needs to add more goals to game.

Kane Ferdinand (8.5) - Before the Wycombe game, would have been happy to see youngster go. Now looks great asset. Controlled midfield, tracked back brilliantly - Daggers need to keep hold.

Matt Richards (6) - Completely anonymous in middle of park. May still not be fully fit following toe infection but if that’s the case, shouldn’t be playing even if squad is at bare minimum.

Ashley Hemmings (8) - Captain for night and took on role with aplomb. Stunning strike to open, only negative was winger should have scored a hat trick. Good to be getting in right positions though.

Christian Doidge (7) - Fabulous work rate again but has to stop moaning about loose elbows and arms when challenging for ball. Should be expected given how striker’s utilised and should relish it.

Matt McClure (7.5) - Know it’s only two games, but inclined to say Doidge & McClure looks like it could be great strike partnership. Fortuitous for goal but doesn’t matter how you score, just that you do.

Substitutes:

Zavon Hines for McClure 73 (7) - Looked lot less tentative and enjoyed toying with Cambridge defence. One-two with Doidge could have ended in glorious goal.

Frankie Raymond for Chambers (87) - No time for impact but return needed with Daggers somewhat lacking creative outlet this year.
