Dagenham & Redbridge manager Wayne Burnett is hopeful of adding to his squad soon.
Dagenham & Redbridge boss Wayne Burnett is keen to complete a deal to sign former Leyton Orient and Cambridge United central defender Brian Saah.
The 26-year-old spent the last two seasons at Torquay under the management of former O’s boss Martin Ling, but after Ling was replaced by Alan Knill as the Gulls boss, Saah has sought a move back to London.
Having featured in the last three Daggers’ pre-season friendlies against Great Yarmouth, Dartford and Thurrock, manager Burnett has seen enough to try and sign Saah to add much-needed competition in defence.
“He’s an experienced boy who has had lots of league games under his belt,” said Burnett.
“He’d admit himself that he is not fully fit, he needs more game time, but I certainly think he is one that will benefit us. He is competition for Luke Wilkinson and Scott Doe so I think it would be important to have that experience that we didn’t have last year.
“I think he would be a good addition to the squad.”
Burnett is hopeful of adding four players to his squad by the time the season starts on August 3 at Fleetwood Town, but admitted to being priced out of moves for several targets in the last week.
However, after Tuesday’s 5-1 win over Thurrock, the Daggers boss hoped to make at least two, maybe three signings in the next few days with trialist strikers Rhys Murphy and Lloyd Macklin impressing once again after both got on the scoresheet.
“I thought certain triallists looked very sharp and I don’t want to give too much away just in case it doesn’t develop,” he added.
“I was pleased with Macklin and Murphy, but I thought when our regular boys came on in the second half they looked quite sharp. “I am certainly going to take two of the players that played. On top of that I see potential for another two players. I am hoping two of the four will be done soon.
“We actually went for five players last week, but couldn’t get them because financially we couldn’t afford to pay the wages.
“I have to be mindful that the club is run in the correct manner and correct fashion I am not going to go beyond our means.”
