Essex club beat Sulphurites 2-1 on Saturday to record first win since September 8

Harry Phipps revealed there was a jubilant mood in the Dagenham & Redbridge changing room on Saturday after they ended a five-game losing streak in the Vanarama National League with a 2-1 win at home to Harrogate Town.

A brace from Alex McQueen put Daggers two goals up at the break, but a late strike from the Sulphurites’ Joe Leesley set up a tense finale.

Mercifully, Peter Taylor’s men were able to hold on for a first league win since a 1-0 victory at Barrow on September 8.

And Phipps, who made his first start since August 14, said there was a party atmosphere in the changing room following the success over Harrogate.

“The boys were buzzing after the game because it had been a while since we last won,” said the 20-year-old.

“It was the first time I’d play that long in a long time, so I felt it a bit at the end, but I was buzzing and buzzing for the boys too.”

To score once at the end of a half always gives a boost heading into the break, so to score twice would have been a huge lift for Daggers.

And after playing well in the opening 45 minutes, Phipps believes the Essex club were good value for their two-goal advantage at the interval.

“It was a great couple of finishes from Alex and we needed that because we were on top in the first half and deserved the two goals,” added the former Maidstone United man.

At the death, players all over the pitch were putting their bodies on the line to keep Daggers in front.

Stopper Elliot Justham also produced some vital saves late on, including one to brilliantly keep out a deflected George Thompson effort in stoppage time.

And Phipps paid tribute to the Daggers custodian for his late heroics against the Sulphurites.

“There were a big couple of saves from El which saved us right at the end,” he said.

“We hung in there, but we deserved the win at the end of the day.”
