BOTH teams fought hard in this Essex Finch League under-11s encounter, but Barking & Dagenham had just enough to secure a vital 3-2 win.

The home side started with flair and imagination as within minutes Christian Pankui set up Edobor who fired his shot over the bar. On the left flank Alfie Hawes threatened, whilst on the right Joe McDermott won every 50-50 ball and his determination was rewarded time and again. Joe Davies was competent in goal as the visitors rarely caused problems in the first 20 minutes.

The first goal for the home side came as the tireless Ditkevicius played a neat pass to Toby Alozie. The defender decided to make a beeline for goal and from the edge of the penalty area he unleashed a powerful shot to beat the keeper.

The home side's second goal followed interplay between McDermott and Abiola. A clever through ball found Owen Edobor in space on the right and his powerful shot gave the keeper no chance.

However, the tone changed when a poorly struck goal kick was punished and the visitors scored. This gave Waltham Forest a boost and the home side were somewhat outwitted for a ten-minute spell. Several hesitant clearances led to the away side's second goal to make the scores level.

After the break Barking & Dagenham set out to capture the winner. A looping ball from Joe McDermott tantalisingly struck the woodwork. Charlie Herring was superb on the right and after outpacing defenders he sent over several awesome crosses. He also fired a menacing low shot just wide of the post.

The home side didn't have it all their own way and despite periods of inactivity, goalkeeper Sam Heard dived dramatically to see a Waltham Forest effort just off target.

Barking & Dagenham's team spirit shone through as they surged forward to grab the winner.

Toby Alozie positioned himself well to score a rare header after the ball rebounded from a crossbar. Waltham Forest never gave up and continued to attack down the left always to meet the impeccable Cole Saunders. The impressive defensive duo of Michael Rhodes and Scott O'Connor soaked up any further pressure.

Barking & Dagenham: Saunders, Rhodes, Davies, Hawes, Alozie, O'Connor, Heard, Abiola, Edobor, McDermott, Pankui, Ditkevicius, Herring.

n Next Saturday the District side face Thurrock who are already the League winners. Barking & Dagenham must win this match to be in contention for the runners up spot.
