Second Qualifying Round

Barking 2 Basildon United 2 (aet)

A LEE PYNE strike three minutes before the end of extra time forced a replay in this FA Vase tie.

Barking made a bright start and took an 11th minute lead when Ruel Sandiford received a pass from Danny Mackin and hit a smashing shot into the roof of the net for his third goal of the season.

Basildon stormed back, but were denied by Alf Dickinson, Scott Walsh and an excellent aerial save by goalkeeper Chris Clark from Richard Robinson.

Clark saved brilliantly from a close range Oliver Baker header, tipping it over the bar, and then dealt with the resulting corner, before Wes Bocking shot wide with the whole of the Barking goal to aim at.

Basildon were on top, but it was the Blues who came closest to finding the net, when Pyne beat his man and launched a terrific shot from 25 yards which looked goalbound, but clipped the top of United's crossbar.

A soaring Clark save kept out a Robinson header towards the top corner, but the equaliser came in the 67th minute from a good shot by Robinson through a crowded penalty area, which gave Clark no chance.

The visitors continued to press and in the 90th minute a Basildon free kick scraped the top of the bar, but Clark had it covered as the tie went to extra time.

The heat began to take its toll on both sets of players, as the tempo slowed.

Basildon took the lead in the 98th minute when Bocking's powerful drive was too hot for Clark to handle, as the ball found the net.

A Hopkins pass evaded Pyne by inches, Small challenged well and then came the dramatic denouement as Small's shirt was tugged in the penalty area and when the various discussions between Basildon and the referee had been concluded, Pyne stepped forward to coolly place the spot-kick into the corner of the net beyond the palms of Palmer in the 117th minute to earn a well-deserved replay.

The return tie took place last night (Tuesday) at the home of Basildon.

Barking: Clark, Leader, Walsh, Greenwood, Dickinson, D Mackin (M de Souza 80), Offei (Adejokun 73), Hopkins, Sandiford (Small 87), Tiffin, Pyne. Subs: Borthwick, Turner.

Attendance: 61.
