Pupils from across the county combine for glory
Essex continued their fine record in this season’s South East England Schools FA (SEESFA) competitions as the county’s under-18s side claimed the regional title with a 6-2 win over Sussex at Barking Abbey School.
The under-18s’ triumph was all but sealed by half time, by which time Essex led 4-1 thanks to goals from Jamie Cartney-Chand, Sean Clare, Kye Jude and Ruben Duarte before adding two more in the second period through Jude, again, and Jamie Price.
Essex were in the ascendency as early as the fourth minute, taking the lead after a good move involving Duarte and Malaki Toussaint.
The pair combined, with Toussaint eventually flicking the ball into the path of Cartney-Chand, who poked home from eight yards out.
A minute after the half hour mark, the lead was doubled as a long Toussaint free kick was delivered onto the head of substitute Clare, whose first involvement in the contest was to loop the ball into the net.
Four minutes later the hosts led 3-0 as a Connor Hogan pass helped Cartney-Chand to tee-up Jude to smash home a half volley from 20 yards though a terrific response from Sussex was confirmed when they pulled a goal back within a minute.
With just minutes left before the break Essex added a fourth with Duarte the goalscorer, beating the Sussex keeper to a long ball forward before firing into the unguarded net from ten yards out.
On 73 minutes Essex made it 5-1 as a low Clare free kick caused problems in the visitors penalty area and, before the ball could be fully cleared, Jude smashed in his second of the afternoon.
Three minutes later it was six, this time courtesy of a fine finish from Price, who found the time and space to bend a shot into the corner from 15 yards.
Sussex completed the scoring with ten minutes remaining by grabbing a consolation but there was no denying Essex hoisting aloft the silverware.
