BARKING finished their Essex Senior campaign with a whimper on Saturday, as a dominant Hullbridge thoroughly deserved their win.

The Blues started well as good work from Lee Pyne set up a header for Matt Knight which the wind and home custodian Bobby Mason combined to keep.

However, Sports then took over and good interceptions were needed by Scott Borthwick and Joe Tungate, while a clever chip over an opponent's head by Mark Doyle and a good Mark Parker save from a deflected shot by Jamie Salmon keep the scores level.

Sam Dennis made a positive run into the home penalty area, but was beaten by a cruel bounce and then Parker made another superb save, coming out to block a shot with his body.

The home pressure was rewarded in the 35th minute when Lloyd Wilson finished well, having received the ball in an unmarked position on the right.

He burst through again moments later, but shot wide and the half ended with a Doyle clearance and good defensive work by Danny Hopkins and Dennis.

After the break, a Hullbridge free kick was headed wide, as was a Doyle cross by Pyne at the other end.

Borthwick intercepted well but his through ball was reached by Mason just ahead of the onrushing Pyne.

Jared Small made an excellent run and cross, from which a good near post Richard Whiteman header went agonisingly just over the bar.

Another good chance fell to Gillard, but perhaps his youth and relative inexperience told as he blasted over the bar from two yards.

An excellent Dennis cross was not met and a determined Pyne run ended in a goal kick.

Barking continued their late revival with a high cross which Mason just managed to palm away from Daniel Gillard and Dennis won a corner from which Pyne's shot was blocked.

Borthwick cleared again, a Pyne free-kick was too high and Craig Greenwood had an effort cleared off the goal line as Hullbridge clung to their lead to finish three places above Barking in ninth position.

Barking: Parker, Doyle, Dennis, Leader, Borthwick, Tungate (Greenwood 86), Gillard, Knight (Whiteman 64), Armstrong (Small 55), Pyne, Hopkins. Subs: Falaise

Attendance: 54.
