Two goals from Tom Jeffes allowed Barking to maintain their best-ever start to an Essex Senior League season and ensure they remain the only unbeaten team this term.

The current crop of Blues players are enjoying the club’s best senior league start for 116 years, since the 1898-9 campaign and Mick O’Shea’s men returned to Greenhouse to record their second 2-1 victory in the space of 11 days, following success in the Gordon Brasted Trophy.

But they had to come from behind as the home side took the lead on 24 minutes.

Barking’s Sipho Mtyanda hit the crossbar bar either side of the Greenhouse goal, before Jeffes levelled from a Luke Foster cross eright minutes before the break.

Jeffes struck again on 40 minutes and it proved enough to secure the points for Blues, who are in fourth place with games in hand on Clapton and Hullbridge.

Barking’s scheduled Essex Senior Cup tie at Chelmsford tonight has been postponed as the Conference South club have an FA Cup third qualifying round replay to contest, having drawn 4-4 with Whitehawk on Saturday.

Blues, therefore, must wait until Saturday to return to action when they welcome Sporting Bengal to Mayesbrook Park.

Barking: J Willis, Ling, Moore (Sherwood 69), Golby, S Willis, Staunton, Foster (Creed 71), O’Brien, Jeffes (Killingback 76), Mtyanda, Barlow.

*Barking’s women booked their place in the next round of the FA Cup with a 4-0 win over Royston Town.

Carly Vigors netted a hat-trick to take her tally for the season to 11 goals, with Claire Brooks also on target.

*Barking FC Futsal were edged out by Kickers in their latest National Division Two South outing at Sporthouse.

Robert Vidra opened the scoring for Barking, with Arpad Toth restoring their lead after Kickers levelled.

Kickers, who only just missed out on promotion last season and boasted a 100 per cent record, struck twice for a 3-2 lead before Soda’s second squared matters once more.

It looked like ending level, but Kickers clinched a 4-3 win in the last minute.

Barking take on Zappsports at Sporthouse next Sunday (October 19, 12pm).
