Ross double earns Rush Green win

West Ham Women began their home campaign with a thumping victory as they came from behind to beat Lewes 4-1 in the League Cup.

Having lost away at Arsenal in their opening game of the season, things seemed to be going wrong again at Rush Green as Lewes scored from a set-piece.

But that was the trigger for West Ham to find their form and take the game to the south coast side.

Scotland international Jane Ross levelled with a thumping long range shot and she also grabbed the fourth and final goal from the penalty spot to wrap things up.

In between, Leanne Kiernan and Julia Simic added further goals as West Ham showed their potential to the delight of manager Matt Beard, who said: “I’m pleased with some of the football we played. We’re starting to see some of the patterns come off and the belief in what we are doing is growing.

“I think our use of the ball was better. I felt that the work we’ve put in on the training pitch showed. It is another learning process though.

“Our midfield three connected a lot better and I think interchanging and movement was better. That’s lessons learned from last week and the work we’ve put in during training this past week.”

For Ross, she was pleased with the 35-yarder that got her off the mark for the Hammers.

“It probably couldn’t have been a much better goal for me to open my account with to be honest,” she said.

“I think it’s great to get a win in our first home game. It was a fun game and a fun occasion.

“It would have been nice if the rain had stopped, but it gave a bit of zip to the grass.

“Lewes took the lead but I feel like we controlled the game for the 90 minutes. We’re disappointed we conceded the goal, but our reaction to going behind was brilliant.”

It was a welcome boost to Beard’s new-look team after that defeat against Arsenal and they now have a chance of getting through their group.

Next up is another home League Cup game against Millwall Lionesses on September 16, which promises to be another tough encounter.
