BATTLING Barking had little luck as they were beaten by in-form Enfield 1893 at Mayesbrook Park on Saturday.

The Blues hit the bar twice and forced a number of saves from the visiting goalkeeper, yet they could not find the finishing touches to gain a valuable point.

The game opened with Barking on the attack and a header from Joe Tungate was pushed round the post, while the striker then shot over.

Barking came within inches of taking the lead on nine minutes when Matt Knight's superb free kick smacked against the bar.

The determination of the men in blue was evident in Craig Greenwood, captain Danny Hopkins and Richard Whiteman along with the defensive work of Bradley Wiggington, Scott Borthwick and Mark Doyle, who put their heart, soul and body in front of the ball.

In the latter minutes of the half, high-flying Enfield exerted pressure on the home goal and Mark Parker made a superb save to deny the opening goal.

After the break, Doyle hit the post after good work by Hopkins, but the Blues were behind on 49 minutes as Jack Coombes slotted home.

It was 2-0 shortly after as Borthwick conceded a penalty and former Barking striker Bradley Jones converted.

Boss Steve Munday made a number of changes as Daniel Gillard, the captain of Loughborough College, making his first appearance, forced an immediate save from Richard Whiteman's flick.

With 89 minutes on the clock, Enfield grabbed a third, when Clark curled the ball past Parker.

The last word went to the Mayesbrook Park side though as Gillard stooped to head home Doyle's corner for a deserved consolation.

Unfortunately, the debutant then had to leave the field after taking a blow to the head, heaping more misery on Barking.

Barking: Parker, Falaise, Greenwood, Borthwick, Wiggington, Hopkins, Doyle, Knight (O'Brien 84), Whiteman, Tungate (Gillard 84), Darr (Small 66).

Substitutes: Moore, Adejokun.

Attendance: 93.
